Portfolio Performance: 4 February 2011

Portfolios tracked using Captool are updated as of 01/31/2011.  I am still behind bringing the TLH spreadsheets up-to-date.  As I enter that material, I will also enter the data in the table below, so refresh the browser screen to make sure you have the latest information.  In almost all cases, we gained ground on the benchmarks and improved the Return/Risk ratios since the last update.

Five Investing Basics

The Basic Rules of Investing

Readers of "The Investment Answer" will remember the five decisions laid out by Daniel Goldie and Gordon Murray.  If you need a quick reminder, go to this site for a review.  You will recall I disagree with Goldie and Murray on the conclusion of the first decision of portfolio management.  Will you do it yourself or will you seek professional help?  Goldie is a fee based money manager so one expects him to advocate investors seek professional help.  I am not a financial advisor so I come to a different conclusion.  You can manage your own portfolio without professional help.  Save the fees which will run from 40 to 100 basis points.  Further, no profession advisor will track your portfolio to the same level of sophistication as you can by implementing the TLH spreadsheet.

Another small investment book I've recommended in the past is co-authored by Burton Malkiel and Charles Ellis.  "The Elements of Investing" also contains five investing ideas where many overlap the decisions listed in the Goldie-Murray book.  The Malkiel-Ellis recommendations align a little more closely with my ideas and I list them below.

1.  Save

2.  Index

3.  Diversify

4.  Avoid Blunders

5.  Keep It Simple

Below you will find my basic investment guidelines as they differ slightly with both Goldie-Murray and Malkiel-Ellis.  The differences are minor or require a little different emphasis.
